EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the UK framework for the care, learning, and development of children from birth to 5 years old. It sets standards for nurseries, preschools, and reception classes to ensure that children learn and develop well in a safe and secure environment.

Assessment:

Montessori Curriculum

The Montessori curriculum is an educational approach developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, emphasizing child-led learning, independence, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical, and social development.

Key Features:

    1. Child-Centered Learning:
      • Independence: Children are encouraged to choose their own activities and work at their own pace, fostering independence and self-discipline.
      • Hands-On Learning: The Montessori environment is equipped with specially designed materials that children use to learn through hands-on experience and exploration.
    2. Prepared Environment:
      • The classroom is carefully arranged to promote independence and order, with materials accessible to children and organized by area of learning.
    3. Mixed-Age Groups:
      • Children of different ages (usually 3 to 6 years old) learn together in the same classroom, promoting peer learning and social development.
    4. Five Areas of Learning:
      • Practical Life: Activities that develop everyday skills, such as pouring, tying, and cleaning, promoting coordination and concentration.
      • Sensorial: Materials that refine the senses, helping children learn about size, shape, color, texture, and sound.
      • Mathematics: Concrete materials are used to introduce mathematical concepts, such as counting, addition, and subtraction.
      • Language: A focus on developing reading, writing, and communication skills through phonetics and hands-on materials.
      • Cultural Studies: Broadens children’s understanding of the world through geography, science, history, and the arts.
    5. Role of the Teacher:
      • Teachers, often called “directors”  observe rather than dictate, stepping in to provide guidance when needed and ensuring that each child is progressing at their own pace.
    6. Focus on the Whole Child:
      • The Montessori method aims to develop not only academic skills but also social, emotional, and practical life skills, nurturing the overall development of the child.
